Watermelon Juice

It doesn’t get more “summer” than this.

This watermelon agua fresca is a farm favorite for all our summer birthday lunches and celebrations. We most often use watermelon (for obvious reasons), but it could be made with any type of melon or fruit (or combinations!). Try playing around with mixing in additional fruits or flavors to your drink!

To make it, all you need is a watermelon and a blender (and maybe a strainer). To enjoy it, you just need ice and a comfy place to relax in the shade.

Carolina’s Watermelon Agua Fresca

Ingredients:

1 Watermelon*

Sugar, to taste (optional – we often go without!)

Optional: lime and/or mint (or any herbs/spices/fruits you like) to garnish

Method:

  • Remove rind from watermelon and cut into 1-2” cubes. Place cubes in blender or food processor and puree until smooth.

  • Put a mesh strainer over a large pitcher or bowl and strain the juice as you transfer the liquid into the pitcher. (If you don’t mind the pulp, feel free to skip this step) Add ice and stir to chill.

  • Taste: if you prefer a sweeter juice, add sugar (start slowly with ~1/4 cup) and stir to dissolve. If you want a thinner consistency, dilute with water (keep in mind, the ice will dilute it some as it melts)

Serve over ice.

* One small/medium Durst Organic Growers sweet gem watermelon will result in about 9 cups of juice - use the whole melon, half, or a quarter depending on how much juice you want. The flesh of our black sweet gem watermelons is a little bit more fibrous than our striped variety and may take a little more time in the blender and strainer.

Leftover juice? Try freezing into cubes and making watermelon slushies!
